This painting was inspired by the view my wife Kathy and I saw at about 5:15 PM on August 23, 2019, while waiting for the door to open for the 5:30 PM seating at one of our favorite restaurants in the world: Ceraldi, in Wellfleet, MA. www.ceraldicapecod.com

The late afternoon light reflecting off of the clouds and the water created subtle coloration in both. It was a profoundly spiritual moment for me; I felt tranquility, awe, and gratitude as I stood there observing in silence.

Chef Michael Ceraldi is himself an artist (and, I may add, a fellow Italian American who traces his roots to Basilicata). There are both spiritual and artistic dimensions to what he does at his restaurant, in addition to culinary excellence and “food as art”. Gazing in wonder at this view was a perfect “aperitivo” for the dinner he prepared for us. It was, as I think about it now, very much like saying “grace” before our meal.

Coincidentally, the day after I completed this painting, Ceraldi was named as one of the best waterfront restaurants in Massachusetts: “Patrons all agree, the waterfront view can’t be beat.” . @masslive
